In order to counter the threat of falsified medicines entering the legal supply chain, the European Parliament and Council have released a Directive on Falsified Medicines (2011/62/EU) (amending Directive 2001/83/EC). It aims at improving patient safety by mandating the Marketing Authorisation Holders and Manufacturers to put a system in place that will prevent falsified medicines from entering the legal supply chain.
According to the legislation, pharmaceutical manufacturers and parallel importers are required to print a GS1 Data Matrix code on the medicine pack. The code should consist of a random serial number unique to each pack, a product code, batch number, and an expiry date. This data should be uploaded to the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) before the packs are distributed in the supply chain.
Trax 2D is an AWS Cloud-based serialisation solution for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Marketing Authorisation Holders around the globe. It provides compliant and high-entropy serial numbers with easy data upload options directly to the EMVS.
